Altona is located 14 km south-west of the CBD. Located on the western side of Port Phillip Bay Altona is a large suburb with primarily residential areas in the south and industry in the north. Altona's industrial sector is significant for its chemical factories and storage plants. The suburb also has large tracts of conservation open space and features the Altona Hospital Cherry Lake Reserve and Altona Beach.
