Training Needs Analysis

Training Needs Analysis (TNA) is a structured, proven system that assists organisations with their training and professional development needs. A fundamental facet of a TNA is that each organisation is analysed based on its specific operations, strategic objectives and culture.

The TNA process usually begins with an evaluation of the types of roles in an organisation and the skills and knowledge requirements for people to operate effectively within them. These skill and knowledge requirements are then mapped against the existing skills knowledge and experience of staff in those roles. The findings are placed into a template and measured against the current needs of the agency and its projected growth and development plans.

The result of the TNA process is the development of a series of training plans for each individual in the organisation. Training plans also take into consideration the rate of change that may exist in each role (new technology, regulatory changes etc).

In most cases staff welcome the opportunity to be involved in this process given that it can provide a great opportunity for them to indicate their willingness to be involved in training and professional development programs.

Although a TNA can be carried out online or with a standard template the best approach to take is to invite an experienced practitioner into your organisation so that a detailed and accurate assessment can be made. Using this approach, the nature and culture of the organisation can be factored into an analysis and best results for training and professional development can be achieved.
