Foreign Investment - The Rules and Regulations for Residential Real Estate

This is an interactive forum that will explain all the current requirements pertaining to foreign investment in residential real estate.

Current regulations determine a number of key issues that can impact on real estate agencies:

Ability for temporary residents to purchase established dwellings under specific guidelines
Ability for temporary residents to purchase new dwellings (never been occupied or occupied for less than 12 months)
Ability for temporary residents to purchase vacant land solely for the purposes of residential development
The notification processes for these acquisitions and or development/re-development
Exemptions from the Act
Mandatory notifications for vacant land, commercial property, mining tenements and forestry acquisitions
Acquisitions of property with accommodation facilities
Acquisitions of rural land

Understanding the rules and regulations pertaining to foreign investment provides a good foundation of knowledge when dealing with overseas investors and temporary residents.

To ensure that you are familiar with these regulations – the REIV is hosting a forum with two senior members of the Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB):

Michael Parkes – Michael manages the unit within the Foreign Investment and Trade Policy Division that oversees compliance with foreign investment legislation
David Gower – David is responsible for the management and processing of real estate applications to FIRB

All attendees will be provided with key fact sheets on these issues and will have an opportunity to ask questions and put forward real examples for clarification and explanation.
